FAQs

Can I use sugar instead of icing sugar in cheesecake? ›

Caster sugar will work as well. Pretty much any sugar can be used. I recommend not using icing sugar/powdered sugar though. A lot of no-bake cheesecakes use this, but I don't know, it's always caused issues for me so I don't recommend using icing sugar for this recipe.

What can I substitute for sugar in cheesecake? ›

Other sugar substitutes will work if that's what you have.

Unlike the filling (below), the almond flour cheesecake crust is not finicky and will also work using erythritol, xylitol, or an erythritol blend (most brands of monk fruit or stevia are actually blended with erythritol).

What type of sugar is best for cheesecake? ›

Our answer. Icing (confectioners') sugar is a fine powder whereas caster (superfine) sugar has very fine granules. Icing sugar dissolves very easily and in the Nutella Cheesecake (from Nigellissima) will give a very smooth texture.

Can I use granulated sugar instead of powdered sugar for cheesecake? ›

It is not recommended to substitute powdered sugar for granulated sugar. Since powdered sugar has a much finer texture, and it contains a small percentage of cornstarch to prevent caking, substituting can give you unexpected results.

You can use dates, fruit purées, yacon syrup, honey, and maple syrup as alternatives to sugar. Although these sweeteners may offer limited health benefits compared with refined sweeteners, any sweetener should be used sparingly.

What is the best substitute for sugar? ›

Stevia and monk fruit are both naturally derived from plants and some people feel they have a flavor very similar to regular sugar. The FDA says these sweeteners are “generally regarded as safe,” which means they are safe to use for their intended purpose.

"Regular sugar has a larger crystal size than powdered sugar," he explains. "This means, cup for cup, there would be more sugar in a cup of powdered sugar than in a cup of regular sugar." In addition to inconsistent measurements, regular sugar won't dissolve and mix as well into recipes like frosting and icing.

How do I substitute granulated sugar for icing sugar? ›

Powdered sugar often is used as a substitute for granulated sugar.
  1. Look at the recipe to determine how much granulated sugar you will need.
  2. Substitute 1 3/4 cups of packed powdered sugar for every 1 cup of granulated sugar.
  3. Add the sugar according to the recipe.

Can you use regular sugar for frosting instead of powdered sugar? ›

Granulated Sugar: I love using granulated sugar because the grit of the sugar crystals helps fluff up the butter and cream cheese, giving the frosting a thick texture. Because of the moisture content of the cream cheese, the sugar dissolves, leaving the frosting smooth.
